Rivers' garbageman named CNN Hero of the Year - CNN.com
Chad Pregracke, an Illinois man who has dedicated his life to cleaning the Mississippi River and other U.S. waterways, is the 2013 CNN Hero of the Year.
Pregracke organizes community cleanups across the country through his nonprofit, Living Lands & Waters. About 70,000 volunteers have pitched in, helping Pregracke collect more than 7 million pounds of trash in the past 15 years.

Una hamburguesa tiene una huella de carbono de entre 3 y 6 kilogramos de CO2... desde cultivar la tierra para producir el cereales para hacer el pan hasta alimentar a las reses, pasando por el transporte, y las flatulencias vacunas. Claro, depende de si añade también queso y salsas y tocino.

5 Consejos para comprar alimentos con una baja huella ecológica:
Compre la producción local, cercana a usted.
Compre alimentos frescos, de temporada.
Compre al granel.
Consuma más frutas, verduras, cereales y menos carne.
Evite comidas rápidas.
La huella del carbono está vinculada con el origen, la producción, la cantidad de recursos materiales usados, la manipulación, el transporte, y el envasado de un alimento.
Por ejemplo: un producto que proviene de otro país y que además haya sido manipulado -digamos que choclo americano en lata- , tendrá una huella de carbono más elevada que la del choclo local.
Alimentos importados, industrializados y envasados son los que mas huellas de carbono producen.
Otro ejemplo: Comprar a granel disminuye los residuos sólidos en empaques, permite controlar el tamaño de las porciones, exige menos procesos de producción -como cuando compra verduras, frutas u hortalizas en el mercado-. Además, los productos son más baratos al granel.
Los productos de ganado vacuno, lácteos y los alimentos procesados son los más contaminantes.

Showering is fun, but it does rack up the water bill. The average family goes through 40 gallons of water a day in the shower.
The OrbSys is an all-in-one unit that recycles water at your feet, cleanses it to drinking quality, then returns it for re-use. Mahdjoubi says a 10-minute shower uses only five liters (1.3 gallons) compared to a standard 150 liters (40 gallons). It also saves 80% in energy costs, because the recycled water remains warm and doesn't need much reheating.

1800 niños menores de 5 años mueren cada día por enfermedades diarreícas vinculadas a la falta de acceso a agua, falta de acceso a servicios sanitarios o malos hábitos de higiene.
